On-Campus COVID-19 Testing

Important Update:

With the federal COVID-19 public health emergency declaration set to expire on May 11, 2023, changes in funding and decreases in demand for services, the Monitoring and Assessment Program (MAP) will end on June 30. The last day of operation will be June 22.

COVID-19 PCR testing through the UO's Monitoring and Assessment Program (MAP) is available for all UO employees, students, and Lane County community members. MAP provides asymptomatic and limited symptomatic testing.

  • MAP is located at McArthur Court.

  • Individuals without symptoms can test inside McArthur Court.

  • Testing for individuals with mild symptoms, similar to the common cold, is available at the ticket booths outside McArthur Court. Individuals with symptoms should not go inside to test.

  • Symptomatic testing is now available by pre-registration. Symptomatic testing will end 30 minutes prior to closing unless otherwise noted.

Appointments are strongly encouraged. Testing for those without appointments will end 30 minutes prior to closing.

Plan at least 20 minutes for the check-in and testing process. MAP test results are available within 2-4 business days. This is not a rapid test.

Individuals should not sign up for MAP testing if they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days.

UO students experiencing symptoms and in need of a medical evaluation can receive COVID-19 testing through University Health Services (UHS). Self-test kits are no longer available for mildly symptomatic students from UHS.

Masks are required at UO COVID-19 testing sites.

Masks should be worn in line even if you are outside.

    Important Considerations

    • Accommodations for people with disabilities can be provided if requested in advance of a scheduled testing event. For MAP testing please contact c19map@uoregon.edu directly for these requests. ADA parking is also available at testing locations.
    • Patients who test positive will receive test results via email in the same way that negative results are reported. County health officials may also contact positive cases via telephone, in addition to the emailed results. For information on what your result means, please see our testing page.
    • MAP uses the saliva collection method for COVID-19 testing. Please see updated collection steps below and email c19map@uoregon.edu with any questions.
    • Need a COVID-19 test to meet travel or event requirements? MAP results take 2-4 business days. If you are traveling to a destination or attending an event with strict entry testing requirements, utilize commercial COVID-19 test providers who administer pre-travel screen tests. Lane County provides a list of testing sites in the community. Remember to check with testing facilities to ensure they meet your test type and time frame requirements.

    What You Need to Know

    • MAP testing is FREE.

    • Testing is conducted primarily through a self-collected saliva sample or a shallow nasal swab (anterior nares) may be offered. Nasal swab test results may take longer.

    • For MAP testing, do not eat, drink, brush teeth, chew gum, or use tobacco within the 30 minutes prior to your test.

    • Masks are required at testing sites. Masks should be worn in line even if you are outside.
    • Individuals should not test through MAP if they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days.

    • Symptomatic testing is available for individuals experiencing mild viral symptoms and who do not need a medical evaluation. Symptomatic testing ends 30 minutes prior to closing unless otherwise noted.

    • UO students experiencing viral symptoms and who are unsure whether they need a medical evaluation, should contact UHS at 541-346-2770 or their health care provider to determine if and where they should be tested for COVID-19.

What to Expect at Your MAP COVID-19 Test

Asymptomatic Testing (without symptoms): On testing day, please show up to the testing site at your scheduled time. Walk-in testing is also available but may require a slightly longer wait time depending on current testing capacity.

Enter McArthur Court from the marked doors located on University Street. After you enter the building, go to the testing check-in table where you will provide your confirmation QR code or register to test as a walk in. Testing personnel will verify your name and other information such as your date of birth. Testing personnel will also prepare your sample collection tube, which you will be asked to take with you to the sample collection station along with a collection cup.

The sample collection personnel will ask you to collect your saliva sample following this process:

    1. Allow saliva to pool in the front of your mouth for about 30 seconds. This can be done passively, no need to snort or gurgle. It may help to think of foods that you enjoy, lemons, or move your jaw like you are chewing.
    2. Once you have some liquid built up in your mouth, gently spit that liquid into your collection cup.
    3. Depending on the volume, you may need to repeat this process 2-3 times.
    4. You may then pass your collection cup to the sample collector who will transfer it into the sample tube.
    5. Occasionally nasal swab tests may need to be offered. The sample collector will walk you through the collection steps.

Symptomatic Testing (mild symptoms): Please line up at the marked ticket booth outside of McArthur Court at your scheduled time on testing day. Walk-in testing is also available but may require a slightly longer wait time depending on the current testing capacity. Once you reach the window, if you do not see a staff member in the booth, ring the doorbell. You will be asked to provide your confirmation QR code or register to test as a walk in. Testing personnel will verify your name and other information such as your date of birth. You will be handed a collection cup and asked to collect your saliva sample following this process:

Any persons on UO property must follow current mask policies. Masks should be worn in line, even if you are outside. As of August 29, 2022 all MAP testing takes place at McArthur Court. Asymptomatic testing takes place inside.

To prepare for the test, do not eat, drink, brush teeth, chew gum, or use tobacco within the 30 minutes prior to your test.

You will receive your results within 2-4 business days.

      Why Get Tested

      • Many people are asymptomatic carriers of the virus meaning they don’t know they are infected but could still pass the virus on to others. If you are asymptomatic, you can prevent further spread of the virus to your family, friends, and others in the community by getting tested for the virus, isolating, and cooperating with contact tracers.

      • Participating in MAP testing helps local public health officials and university leaders understand the current situation so they can develop and enact strategies to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

      • Testing provides a snapshot in time, giving information needed to identify pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. This information allows individuals to isolate or quarantine and reduce spreading COVID-19 in the community.
