We are working with other Oregon universities and with guidance from the Oregon Health Authority to ensure a safe living and dining experience for those living on campus. Physical distancing will be implemented throughout common areas and dining halls and we will continue to employ enhanced safety and cleaning protocols throughout the residence halls.

What You Need to Know

  • UO students living in the residence halls who are fully vaccinated are now exempt from required asymptomatic COVID-19 testing. Students must verify their vaccination status through University Health Services.

  • Residence halls will be open to first-year, transfer, and returning students who plan to live with us in spring 2021, and we encourage first-year students to come to Eugene to experience life on campus. For fall 2021, we’re excited to welcome you to our residence halls as the UO plans to return to mostly in-person classes and experiences.

  • Rooms will be doubles and singles only. For physical distancing purposes, we will have no triple rooms.

  • Dining is grab-and-go with limited seating in Carson Hall and outside seating available at Global Scholars Hall and the Living Learning Center. Online ordering through GrubHub is also available for point-based meal plans and Duck Bucks. All dining at the EMU remains grab-and-go and prepackaged for takeout.

  • Common areas like lounges and study spaces have been modified with appropriate furniture and maximum capacities for appropriate physical distancing.

  • In order to provide students with a safe and positive living and learning environment, and at the guidance of health authorities and the state, we are setting aside entire sections of our residence halls for isolation, should they be needed.

University Housing

Will University Housing and Dining remain open?

University Housing and Dining will remain open during fall, winter, and spring terms.

Physical distancing will be implemented throughout common areas and dining halls, and we will continue to employ enhanced safety and cleaning protocols throughout residential and dining spaces.

There may be some adjustments to living options—for example, we are not planning on having students live in triple rooms. If students have questions, they can call or text the housing office at 541-346-4277.

Dining halls will be open for students, but with limited seating and physical distancing. They will operate under all appropriate food service safety guidelines from local health authorities.

Housing and dining will follow guidance from federal, state, and local health authorities and University Health Services to implement physical distancing and increased prevention strategies.

We are reducing density and making plans for extra cleaning, particularly in shared bathrooms. We are also setting aside entire sections of our residence halls for isolation, should that become necessary.

Who can live in the residence halls this spring?

The residence halls will be open to first-year and transfer students, as well as returning students who have chosen to live on campus this spring.

What safety measures are in place for students living in our residence halls?

Our expanded testing capacity allows us to implement a comprehensive move-in strategy for on-campus housing that involves pre-testing of each student on move in, including follow-up testing a few days later.

We are following guidance from the Oregon Health Authority to ensure a safe living and dining experience for those living on campus.

Physical distancing will be implemented in all activities and throughout common areas and dining halls and we will continue to employ enhanced safety and cleaning protocols throughout the residence halls.

What plans are there for physical distancing for students in the residence halls?

We are committed to meeting—and in many cases exceeding—all of the standards and guidance from the Oregon Health Authority for our residence halls. We are reducing density and making plans for extra cleaning, particularly in shared bathrooms. No students will live in triples in our residence halls.

Residents and staff are encouraged to follow physical distancing measures, including:

  • Maintaining six feet of distance between people when spending time in the residence halls.
  • Wearing face coverings in all indoor spaces is required.
  • Engaging in remote social programs and activities.

Why are you testing all residence hall students?

The University of Oregon is committed to following medical authority guidance to reduce the risks of transmission of COVID-19. We understand that during the COVID-19 pandemic, this includes taking several measures.

Testing helps identify positive cases which, when paired with contact tracing and isolation, frequent hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks, can significantly slow the spread of COVID-19.

Who is paying for these tests?

The university is covering the costs of these tests.

Do you have more details about the residence hall testing?

We have a dedicated team of professionals in our housing, health services and testing teams working together to ensure that this is an efficient and effective process, focused on helping to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on campus and supporting any students who arrive on our campus already carrying the COVID-19 virus.

Will testing continue to be required for residents who are vaccinated?

No. When an individual is fully vaccinated (14 days after the final dose of the vaccine), they are no longer required to participate in the MAP testing program to live in the residence halls. Individuals’ vaccination status will be verified through University Health Services and provided to University Housing for managing the testing requirement.

The other prevention strategies to which we all have become accustomed —face coverings, physical distancing, symptom self-checks, and limited gathering — will remain in effect and continue to be important components of our health and safety plans.

What plans are in place if a housing resident gets COVID-19?

  • Isolation: Individuals who test positive for COVID-19, and its purpose is to slow the spread of the disease by separating positive individuals from people who are not infected.
     
  • Quarantine: Individuals who may be exposed to a positive case, and its purpose is to slow the spread of the disease by separating and restricting the movement of individuals who were exposed to minimize the exposure of others and to monitor them if they become sick

At the guidance of health authorities and the state, we are setting aside entire sections of our residence halls for isolation (for positive cases) or quarantine (for contacts) should that become necessary for those students living in the residence halls.

Students who are identified as needing a temporary room assignment for isolation or quarantine will have detailed information provided to them first via phone by the UO Care Team, then followed up with information in their My Housing portal.

A housing resident who is identified as requiring isolation or quarantine will be assigned to a quarantine or isolation room, receive meals delivered outside their door (three meals delivered twice daily), and the student may only leave per health authority instruction. In addition to daily cleaning by custodial staff, there will be additional sanitizing of touch points using EPA-registered disinfectants.

A student in isolation (positive case) will not be able to leave their room and therefore, the risk is minimized for cross-interaction with residents once in their room. Exceptions include medical appointments and designated outdoor time.

We will take every precaution to keep residents and staff safe. Custodial staff will use appropriate PPE when cleaning quarantine and isolation spaces. Residence life staff will provide appropriate community care and programming remotely.

Greek Life

Will fraternity or sorority houses be open?

We want to return to a robust set of student life activities, including Greek life. We will require appropriate physical distancing and group size limits set by state and local health officials.

Each chapter’s facility is privately owned and operated, so the determination whether or not to remain open is not a UO decision. The Office of the Dean of Students is in contact with the national organizations and housing corporations that own the facilities, so that the UO is aware of the individual decisions that they are making.

If facilities remain open, we are encouraging property owners to connect with Lane County Public Health about additional health and safety measures.

What resources will the UO provide for students living off campus who must self isolate or quarantine?

The UO has identified several hotels willing to offer reduced nightly rates for students who live off campus and need to self-isolate or quarantine outside of their homes.

Students who live off campus and require assistance in getting a hotel space, food delivery, or financial support while isolating or quarantining can contact the Corona Corps Care Team at 541-346-2292 or coronacorps@uoregon.edu for additional guidance and resources.

The UO is also working with sororities, fraternities, and large student housing complexes to encourage them to determine how they might identify isolation and quarantine spaces within their facilities or otherwise assist their tenants with this issue.


Off-Campus Housing

Can students who are not living in residence halls also be tested?

Free COVID-19 testing is available for all UO employees and students through university’s Monitoring and Assessment Program (MAP) on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required via the MAP registration portal. This portal will be updated every Friday for registrations the following week.

Diagnostic testing, for those who feel ill or believe they may have been exposed to the virus, is available at various sites for UO students.

What resources will the UO provide for students living off campus who must self isolate or quarantine?

The UO has identified several hotels willing to offer reduced nightly rates for students who live off campus and need to self-isolate or quarantine outside of their homes.

Students who live off campus and require assistance in getting a hotel space, food delivery, or financial support while isolating or quarantining can contact the Corona Corps Care Team.

The UO is also working with sororities, fraternities, and large student housing complexes to encourage them to determine how they might identify isolation and quarantine spaces within their facilities or otherwise assist their tenants with this issue.

I have a rental agreement with a property management company or landlord, and I want to end my lease. Can the UO help?

The University of Oregon is unable to intervene in any contracts between students and other entities such as landlords or property management companies. However, ASUO Legal Services may be able to help with legal advice on a number of matters, including disputes between tenants and landlords.
